Timothy Goodman, 32, and Jessica Walsh, Credit: Santiago Carrasquilla. Longtime NYC friends Jessica Walsh, 26, and Timothy Goodman, 32, launched the blog with the idea of seeing what would happen if they gave love a chance for 40 days — and made the entire thing public. The result led to a massive social media following of readers anxiously gobbling up the daily installments as Jessica and Tim experienced all the highs and lows of a new relationship, both struggling with their own dating demons: Jessica with her tendency to fall too fast, and Tim with his inability to commit to one woman.
Their side-by-side writings were like a magnifying glass into the psyches of any man or woman trying to navigate a new romance in New York City — their brutal honesty about themselves and each other is likely what led the blog to wild popularity. Would the two stay together after the experiment? Would they break up? The people wanted to know. The couple decided to spend the last few days of the experiment on their agreed-upon one weekend getaway.
Their location of choice? Disney World. Jessica, though she seemed willing to try to work it out, came to terms with the fact that they might not be compatible — and she needs more than Tim could offer her. And no, they did not have breakup sex. I do want to be in a relationship.

When good friends Tim and Jessie were both single at the same time and lamenting their own bad habits when it came it to relationships they came up with the brain child of 40 Days of Dating. Their experiment had very basic ground rules: they had to see each other every day, they had to fill out a questionnaire every day to document their experiment, they had to go to couple’s therapy once a week, and they had to go on a weekend trip together at some point during the 40 days.
After the experiment, while reviewing some of their questionnaire responses, Tim and Jessie realized that the results were worth sharing and they turned the project into a blog which quickly went viral and resulted in, amongst other things, this book. This was a fascinating social experiment to read. Due to the layout of the questionnaires it’s really fascinating to get a literal he said, she said about each day of the project and to see how two people can perceive the same scenarios.
Seeing how two people who already know each other well and are aware of their own and their partner’s own relationship bad habits made for some really interesting read. The book also includes journal entries from Tim and Jessie after the project ended and it was wonderful to get some further insight into their relationship post-experiment. As Goodman and Walsh are both designers, the book itself is also a gorgeous object on its own. Here at Walmart.

The New Yorkers had been friends for four years, but after finding themselves single at the same time, they decided ‘dating‘ each other would be a worthwhile experiment, and documented each day on their website. The story of Jessica Walsh, 26, and Timothy Goodman, 32, both designers based in New York who decided ‘dating‘ each other for 40 days would be a worth-while experiment, will be turned into a film by Warner Bros.
Although the two friends revealed that they broke up on the very last day August 18 Miss Walsh and Mr Goodman insists the experiment was a success. Part social experiment, part design project, the pair navigated the ‘friend zone’ while exploring their relationship habits and fears. They followed six rules, including one that made them exclusive.
But there were no rules that we had to,’ explained Mr Goodman. After sharing their first kiss on day 18, the pair found it difficult to keep up appearances. Other rules included seeing each other every day, going on three dates a week and having one weekend trip together. Mr Goodman added that the first kiss, though ‘exciting,’ was a strange experience. So you had to take everything with a grain of salt.
